Medications That Cause Insomnia

What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is defined has persistent difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep at night. This is when you have sufficient time to sleep but you just lay awake in bed, wishing you could sleep.

Medications That Cause Insomnia

Below is a list of medications that cause insomnia. These are just some of the medications that cause insomnia. These medications are divided into categories such as SSRIs, Alpha Blockers, Beta-Blockers, Corticosteroids, and Statins.

SSRI Antidepressants – Examples: citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva), and sertraline (Zoloft).

Alpha-Blockers –Examples: alfuzosin (Uroxatral), doxazosin (Cardura), prazosin (Minipress), silodosin (Rapaflo), terazosin (Hytrin), and tamsulosin (Flomax).

Beta-Blockers –Examples: atenolol (Tenormin), carvedilol (Coreg), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol), propranolol (Inderal), sotalol (Betapace), timolol (Timoptic), and some other drugs whose chemical names end with “-olol.”

Corticosteroids- Examples: cortisone, methylprednisolone (Medrol), prednisone (sold under many brand names such as Deltasone and Sterapred), and triamcinolone.

ACE Inhibitors- Examples of ACE inhibitors include: benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), fosinopril (Monopril), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), moexipril (Univasc), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril), ramipril (Altace), and trandolapril (Mavik).

Angiotensin II-receptor blockers (ARBs)- Examples of ARBs include: candesartan (Atacand), irbesartan (Avapro), losartan (Cozaar), telmisartan (Micardis), and valsartan (Diovan).

Second-generation (nonsedating) H1 antogonists- Examples of second-generation H1 antagonists include: azelastine (Astelin) nasal spray, cetirizine (Zyrtec), desloratadine (Clarinex), fexofenadine (Allegra), levocetirizine (Xyzal), and loratadine (Claritin).

Statins (cholesterol medications)- Examples: The top-selling statins are atorvastatin (Lipitor), lovastatin (Mevacor), rosuvastatin (Crestor), and simvastatin (Zocor).

If you are on one of these medications and struggling to sleep at night, talk to you healthcare provider about alternative options. Do not discontinue medication on your own, as it can be dangerous. It’s important to work with your doctor to make the right health choices for you.
